Jat Airways was the national flag carrier and largest airline of Serbia and the former Yugoslavia. Founded in 1927 as Aeroput, the airline ceased operations during World War II. After resuming operations in 1947, the airline was renamed JAT Yugoslovenski Aerotransport on 1 April 1947. The airline she was renamed again on 8 August 2003. The operation was based at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport and operated scheduled, charter and wet his leased flights to 72 international destinations outside the region formerly part of Yugoslavia. Jat Airways was owned by the Serbian government and had 1,250 employees.
On 1 August 2013, the Government of Serbia and Etihad Airways signed an agreement to reorganize the business of Jat Airways, renaming it to Air Serbia after the transition period has ended. Certain assets such as the ATR 72 aircraft will be transferred to Air Serbia, while others (such as the 737-300) will remain JAT Airways branded until decommissioned. The curtain closed on the 66-year history of the JAT brand.
